Taking up the petition filed by rapper Honey Singh seeking quashing of FIR registered against him by Nawanshahr Police for singing obscene songs, the Punjab and Haryana high court issued notices to the state government as well as Nawanshahr SSP for September 10.

The high court also issued notice to a Nawanshahr based non-governmental organisation, Human Empowerment league of Punjab (HELP), on whose complaint FIR was registered at Nawanshahr city police station under section 294 (obscene acts and songs to the annoyance of others in public place) of the Indian Penal Code on May 15.

Honey Singh, whose real name is Hirdesh Singh, informed the court that the complainant had leveled totally baseless allegations against him in order to harass and malign his image. The complainant had registered the FIR stating that there is a very obscene and vulgar song titled “Main Hoon Balatkaari” (I am a rapist) sung by Honey Singh, which was available on the website portal “Youtube”, for which he is required to be prosecuted for hurting the civilised Indians and creating an atmosphere of hatred.

The singer informed the court that he had never sung the objectionable song in question and had no relation with the song in any manner. He informed that this song had been existing on ‘Youtube’ since February, 2008 wherein some unidentified singers were singing the song.

Earlier on July 4, the high court had disposed of the public interest litigation filed by Human Empowerment league of Punjab stating, “we clarify that in view of the averments made in his (Honey Singh’s) affidavit, he (Honey Singh) may take such steps in accordance with law as are right qua the FIR registered.”
